“Nursing is an art: and if it is to be an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.”-Florence Nightingale
Hello, my name is Jennifer L. Walters, RN, BSN, CPN. I am the school nurse and science lab instructor at KnILE. I am so happy and honored to be a part of the KnILE family! I have been a nurse for over 19 years! Pediatrics is my passion, my calling. I graduated from the University of Texas School of Nursing in the Texas Medical Center (TMC) with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2000. I began my nursing career at Texas Children’s Hospital in the TMC in Critical Care, the Progressive Care Unit (PCU). As soon I toured the unit and saw the amazing staff and how they cared for the patients, I knew that this was the place for me! I learned so much from my preceptors, nursing peers, LVNs, RTs, PCAs, UCAs, MDs, OT/PTs, Child Life Specialists, Pharmacy, Case Managers, Social Workers and many other disciplines. And the best teachers of all, the patients and families! I took care of patients with complex diagnoses and requiring extensive monitoring with technology/equipment support,. Despite all that my patients and families went through they never gave up, they were warriors! I was a Preceptor, Team Leader, Charge nurse, Clinical Practice Council Chair at unit and global level, Magnet Champion and Presenter, Evidence Based Scholar, Tracheostomy Educator and Evening Nurse Manager to name just a few hats that I wore! I earned by Certified Pediatric Nurse Certification (CPN) in 2005. After 11 years in the PCU I took some time off to be home with my family. But, I could not stay away too long from nursing, I missed taking care of my patients. I did subbing at local school and when a part time position presented itself, I took it and as was a school nurse for 5 years.
I am a native Texan, born in Houston. I love all things Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel. And of course, I love coffee!! I have been playing soccer and softball since I was able to walk and I love football! I met my husband, Matthew, through a friend and we have been married for over 15 years! I am so thankful for his service in the Navy for 6 years on the USS Carl Vincent. We have two amazing children, Elisabeth (13) and Joshua (10). Elisabeth came to KnILE in the 6th grade and it has been a blessing ever since! The KnILE teachers and staff have helped her through her academic and emotional challenges with customization of learning, creativity, caring, and dedication. I knew that I wanted to feel the “KnILE Effect” and be a part of this awesome team of teachers and staff! I am super excited be the school nurse and science lab instructor!
